My 1D is my workhorse right now, but heavy while running after children. If this Mk3 is as good as I think it is I will get another and sell my 1Dmk4. For my line of work (children and families) the 5D mk3 should be plenty fast and I'm looking forward to carrying around a little less camera. Love the 1Dmk4, focus is spot on and it's fast much faster than the 5Dmk3. I have the 1D mk4 and just picked up my 5Dmk3 yesterday (I will be selling my 5Dmk2 and hopefully my 1Dmk4). In fact, your point would be stronger with the original 5D whose image quality many prefer to Mark 2. I see your point, but you assume the value is in making reasonable photos on a tight budget, but it is not always the case.
For the amateur at this level the value is in enjoying the process of working with the best of class, which is also Mark 3. I totally see your point and many people (non photo professionals) will love the 5D MKIII for just that reason.įor the pro, Mark 3 is clearly a better value. I do some work for money but no where near enough to live on. After using the 5D MKII for 2 years, I bought a 1D MKIV and it felt so much more serious a camera. I guess, from my point of view as an amateur, if money is no object, I'd go right to the 1DX. One does not have to make money on cars to drive a Mercedes, so why dies he have to make money on photography to enjoy 5D3 or else look for a bargain of outdated used 5D2?

The median salary of a professional photographer is under $50k, less than a computer programmer, and only a few make over $100k. Well, an amateur who is in the market for 5D3 probably makes more money than a pro, just not on photography. I understand that those who can afford NEW usually want NEW, regardless of if "they need" new.įor the amateur, the secondhand 5D MKII looks like a real bargain right now. The 5D MKIII AF alone will be of more value to the Pro who must get it right than to the amateur that wants to get it right. The amateur can afford to miss shots that "he wants to" take.
The pro can less afford to miss shots that "he has to" take. The 5D MKIII is nowhere near twice the camera at twice the price. There is no question about the better value for money.
